"Warm, colourful beacon"

Google has announced it is rolling out a new favicon - the small icon that greets you when you access Google on your URL bar or your bookmarks list.

Last refreshed back in June 2008, this time round the search giant asked users to submit ideas and designs for the icon.

Impressed by the volume of submissions received, Google said it has drawn on design elements and ideas from many of them but the final design comes from one submission in particular.

Andre Resende, a computer science undergraduate student at the University of Campinas in Brazil, submitted a white "g" on a colour-blocked background that the company says "capture[d] the essence of Google".

A Google blog post states: "While I'm sure we will update it again, we also hope our new favicon inspired by Andre is a warm, colorful beacon to Google on your browser tabs and bookmarks".
