Icephone mobile phone offers triple clamshell design

CES 2009: Spec laden handset promised for later in the year

A London based Scottish company is hoping to take on the likes of Nokia and RIM with a new smartphone due out in the UK from July.

Called the Icephone the new model, currently being manufactured promises to be not your average mobile handset.

Sporting not just one clamshell but two the Windows Mobile 6.0 powered device was originally designed for the British military.

"It was for the army, however we soon realised we had something sexy on our hands and approached the operators in the UK", Graham Gilmour from the makers Medicalphone.

Specs include a large 3-inch touchscreen display, HSDPA 3G connectivity, a tough rugged design, GPS and the ability to play games.

Users will also get a full Qwerty keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 3.1- megapixel camera with LED flash, Push to Talk, microSD slot and dual SIM for work and personal accounts.

If that wasn't enough the phone will also sport what the company call iCE Aid medical emergency software.

The phone is expected to be available in July on Vodafone and O2 according to the makers, however without a fully working model to show off at CES we are slightly dubious to those claims.
