Facebook has announced that it has 150 million people actively using facebook.com with almost half of them using Facebook every day.

According to the company's blog that means that people in every continent including Antarctica are using the service to find friends and stay in touch.

If Facebook were a country, it would be the eighth most populated in the world, just ahead of Japan, Russia and Nigeria.

Last month Plusnet revealed that Facebook was the second most popular website among its customers Christmas Day with activity on the social networking site starting to rise between 2pm and 3pm.

By 4pm to 5pm it had increased by 25% as Britons contacted friends and family. Facebook was beaten only by Google in the study by the internet service provider which analysed web usage and traffic over the festive period.
