Sony will go head-to-head with Apple's iPod touch following the launch of the Walkman X-series at CES in Las Vegas.

The new model will feature a 3-inch OLED screen and Sony says promise the company's "Best-ever WALKMAN sound quality with S-Master Digital Amplifier and Clear Audio technologies".

Supporting all popular music and video formats, the X-Series will come with Wi-Fi "for Easy YouTube streaming" and internet browsing.

The player will also feature Digital Noise Cancelling technology that Sony say will cut background noise whether you’re onboard a plane, bus/train or in the office.

The company has also announced the launch of a W Series that will feature a "ZAPPIN" mode, which offers a fun new way to browse quickly through your music collection. It automatically detects and plays the main chorus part of each track, helping you find the song you want with just a few touches of the player’s jog dial.

The Walkman X and W series will be available from Spring 2009.
