Macworld 2009: Via Truphone app

6 January 2009 3:11 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Skype users will soon be able to talk to each other via the iPhone thanks to Truphone.

Officially announcing on Tuesday at the start of Macworld in San Francisco, Pocket-lint has learnt that Truphone will announce that it has worked with Skype to bring the ability to make Skype to Skype calls via the iPhone and the 2nd generation iPod touch.

All customers will have to do is to download the Truphone application and sign in with their Skype ID to see their regular contacts.

“The introduction of Skype calling and instant messaging represents yet another breakthrough for Truphone”, said Geraldine Wilson, Truphone CEO. “What this means for Truphone’s customers, is that they can now call or message all their Skype friends using their iPhone or iPod touch. This allows iPhone and iPod touch users to have a choice in how they stay in touch with friends and colleagues around the world all within the one application”.

The service is scheduled to be available to all customers the week starting 12 January 2009.

The company has also announced that it will be adding support for MSN, Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk to the service.

  • Here in the US, AT&T Mobility provides the GSM voice service portion of iPhone's voice capability. Wonder what they are thinking about this little VOIP development appearing on their partner's (Apple) App Store site? Surely it won't impact intra-US calling as you must pay a monthly flat rate for a certain level of minutes anyway but this may take a little shine off the apple (no pun intended) of the far more profitable and expensive International minutes that likely run over their networks coming off of iPhones. AT&T must not be too happy to see the cannibalization of these far more profitable International voices minutes being substituted into a flat rated data plan that one also is required to pay for (loss of incremental revenue while incurring increased data network transport costs due to the added VOIP load). Perhaps and just perhaps, this may put the pressure on AT&T and other mobile operators to lower their voice rates Internationally so as not to see a larger and more damning exodus to VOIP over time. So much for payback on the handset subsidfization fee, eh!! I for one as an iPhone user will do this for my International calls once I dowenload Truphone. Goodluck ATT holding onto that one!!!
