UK housewives spend the most time online, a recent survey has revealed.

The survey, conducted by TNS - that canvassed 27,000 web users in 16 countries - saw UK housewives spending 47% of their free time surfing the Internet.

This compares with 39% for students and 32% for the unemployed.

China came out as the top surfing nation, with 44% of their free time spent online.

The survey also revealed what others before it have also confirmed - online is becoming an increasingly important way of staying in contact with friends.

A quarter of respondents revealed that they have "online-only" friendships, with those in the 35 to 44-year-old group claiming around 33% of their friends are online only.
