Yahoo Mail to offer "smarter inbox"

"New open social features"

Yahoo Mail has introduced the next generation of its webmail, rolling out what they say is a "smarter inbox" experience.

Yahoo Mail has now been opened to content and services built outside the Yahoo network as part of the Yahoo Open Strategy scheme.

This means the webmail service is open to developers to create third party applications for Yahoo Mail users to use.

As well as the changes to Mail, Yahoo is tweaking My Yahoo to be more customisable, a little like iGoogle and will launch a revamped Toolbar.

This is being done "gradually" with apps in the first release including Flixster, Wordpress, and Xoopit.

Yahoo is beta-testing the changes with a limited group of Yahoo Mail "power users" in the US.
