Nokia is to begin manufacture of its own HSDPA modems, a senior company exec has revealed.

Entering a rapidly growing market, Nokia will begin shipping its first dongle early next year, taking on current market leader Huawei.

Tapio Markki, vice president for hardware platform components at Nokia told Reuters that the company will build on its 3G technology expertise:

"Leveraging these capabilities, we believe we are well-positioned to become one of the winning providers for HSPA modem solutions. The market for HSPA modems is expected to grow very rapidly during the coming years".

Nokia has not revealed product spec or pricing with the devices likely to be sold either through operators or bundled with services.
