500,000 sign up for $1 excess charge ahead of schedule

More Blu-ray owners in the States are willing to fork out extra to rent titles than was originally forecast.

Movie rental company Netflix's chief financial officer revealed that the company's subscribers have added the option of receiving Blu-ray Disc titles at a quicker rate than Netflix forecast in October.

Netflix has now surpassed its year-end goal of having 500,000 (out of just under 9 million) subscribers pay an extra $1 a month for the option of renting Blu-ray titles.

This success, and general strong stats from the company, has been attributed to the US economic slowdown that has forced consumers to go out less frequently for entertainment.
