Google to launch Chrome out of beta

As early as January

Google is planning to take its recently launched Chrome browser out of beta as early as January, reports suggest.

Revealed by Google vice president Marissa Mayer in an interview with Michael Arrington at Le Web 08, it's a surprise move for the company that has left its Gmail product in beta for four years.

Google's Chrome - described at launch as a web platform rather than just a browser - has around 1% market share since it launched in September.

TechCrunch suggests that there are plenty of PC manufacturers who would like to offer Chrome pre-loaded, but can't do so until its full release when it loses the beta tag.
