Five reasons PCs are better than Macs

16 December 2008 11:00 GMT / By Jason Denwood

In the second of two parts, we asked a Mac head and a PC bod to give their five top reasons why one system beats the other.

PCs are better because:

You rarely hear "not available on the PC"
When was the last time you heard that the latest bit of software isn't available for PC? It just doesn't happen. The latest Google apps always launch on PC first, the latest Adobe software, PC first, SlingBox, networking software all PC first. If you want the latest software and plenty of it, PC is the way to go.

So much cheaper I can have two
PCs are great value for money. Don't see any £200 Apple Macs floating around do you? Go PC and you can save around double that you would pay for "Apple tax" - and still get a faster machine in most cases.

You can play the latest games
Like games? Then you'll be wanting a PC. When was the last time you saw someone playing games on the Mac? It's for getting artsy crafty isn’t it? Whether it's a first person shooter like Battlefield 1942, real time strategy like Command and Conquer or a massive multiplayer online role playing game like World of Warcraft you're going to need a machine that is powerful enough to cope now and easily upgradeable in the future. You can't even replace the battery on those MacBook Airs let alone the graphics card.

You can build a system that is best suited for your needs
The PC is all about tinkering with your system to get the most out of it like a performance sports car. Want better graphics? No problem. Want more storage? Hey, you can do that too. With thousands of manufacturers making parts, there is so much choice, you can choose the best bit for you rather than get stuck with what Apple says you can have. When you get the right bits for your system you can then tune it to make it even better. Why not overclock your processor? If it can do it, you need to push it to the limit.

You can get something that will fit in your handbag
That MacBook Air might be thin but it's not a touch on the size of PC netbooks from Asus, MSI, Acer, Dell, HP, LG, and anyone else who's got one for sale. Small and light the netbook class of models are the most portable computers around. It's not just netbooks though, PC desktops come in lots of different sizes and guises as well rather than something that's just plain old silver.

  • 1) yeah, it's really important to get the latest bit of software, isn't it? Beta testing for free...

    2) nope, not faster... you can run Vista faster on a Mac (that's been proven)... cheapness/ That's right!! You can get two vhrs for the price of a DVD player!!!

    3) yeah, why get a Wii that's cheaper than a PC, less expensive to outfit, runs HD, and more...

    4) let's see... the Mac's graphic card can be changed, you can add a larger internal drive.. what "right bits" are you talking about? Oh, and VISTA is so rock-solide that MS had to allow "downgrading" to XP. That's really high performance... even a lawsuit by vendors against MS regarding VISTA requirements.

    5) you can install Mac OS leopard on an Asus.... furthermore, I don't own a handbag.

Pretty simplistic set of reasons, Jason... guess you've developed your own "reality" rather than that which is.

Time and time again my VISTA using clients have been having a ton of problems, crashes, and are generally miserable.

Doesn't happen with my Mac-based clients. Guess they enjoy their BMW over a Ford Truck.

  • 6. Apple = proprietary everything. If Apple made a car, it would run on Apple gas only.
    7. It seems to be possible to use a PC without making it a key component of your very identity. I want a computer, not membership in a fan boy cult.
    8. The software development tools for PCs are exponentially better.

  • Moving abroad I found a great solution which allows me to have my slingbox hosted in the USA so I can watch live american TV stations anywhere I travel abroad - I've been using http://www.parkmytv.com for about 2 months and it works like a charm. Would rec to anyone traveling or moving abroad... Posted by Jim, Thailand
  • You rarely hear "not available on the PC"

In retort, I hardly ever find any program that I ever want to use that is available for the PC. All my apps for the web and *cough* decoding? things... are only *NIX based.

So much cheaper I can have two

How can they say "Apple Tax" when every PC comes with a fucking "Windows" tax... it's the same thing!!! Sure, they're not cheap cheap, but you get three years warranty, and if you don't know how to do anything they are really helpful. Whereas if you go into PC World looking for advice you find someone that failed an ICT GCSE or someone like me who doesn't give a crap.

You can play the latest games

All the games mentioned in this article are available for Mac... They should have done their research because there are so many that aren't... how unlucky (or stupid) are they! And I don't like gaming, no time... I have to do REAL work on my Mac :)

You can build a system that is best suited for your needs

Buy the machine you need for gods sake... tinkering with computers is what makes them unstable and break. I built a PC tower 5 years ago... I never touched the thing, and it STILL works, I just happened to want to upgrade to a Mac. Tinkering is for gamers.

You can get something that will fit in your handbag

Errm.... Why??? I like a nice big 15" screen MINIMUM, anything smaller and I might as well do it on my phone, or even better my iPod Touch :P

    So to sum things up:

Gamers - buy a PC, upgrade it, complain at the price of the new games and new hardware you need to support it and pay Microsoft for their poorly developed, overpriced and miss-managed software.

Everyone else - build a simple reliable machine and run a decent operating system, OR buy a Mac.

  • ".....How can they say "Apple Tax" when every PC comes with a f*cking "Windows" tax... it's the same thing!!!..."

never heard of buying a PC WITHOUT an Operating System , the putting some kind of Linux OS on it , voila no 'tax' , can you do the same with a MAC ?? Genuine

  • Reason number 6: Speed

My wife's HP laptop running Vista Business:

1 min 50 seconds to get to the log in screen
3 min 50 seconds before you can run an application
Total time before you can use the pc: 5 min 40 seconds

My 13" Macbook running OS X

29 seconds to get to the log in screen
56 seconds before you can run an app
Total time before you can use the Mac: 1 min 24 seconds

    Get a Mac!!

  • Anyone who compares run speed between a mac and a PC is a f***ing Idiot. Computers in case you didn't know are fully customizable, yes even laptops. A mac that is say $3000 can claim to run faster than that little Acer budget book, But if you take a fully loaded MacBook Pro and Put that against say a Alienware M17 notebook. The end result will be running all your applications and such on your shiny Alienware. But that doesn't mean macs are useless. They make good doorstops, wheel chocks, the heat generated by them can keep u warm in the winter, u can break windows with them. Also Macs when you factory order them have very few options, and to get upgrades for them is a pain in the ass and also very expensive. Posted by John, United States
