Sony cutting 8000 jobs

Factories to close too

Sony is the latest consumer electronics company to reveal massive job cuts in the face of the economic slowdown.

The Japanese firm is to cut 8000 jobs worldwide, slash investment in electronics operations by 30% and close several factories in an attempt to save $1.1 billion a year.

The job losses, apparently the biggest announced by an Asian firm so far, will be in Sony's core electronics division and will be completed by March 2010.

"These initiatives are in response to the sudden and rapid changes in the global economic environment", Sony said in a statement.
