Stephen Fry blasts Vista and Vaios

"I hate Vista so much I want to cry"

8 December 2008 9:45 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Stephen Fry has let rip another tech-related tirade on Twitter, this time with PCs on the receiving end of the Mac-loving entertainer's bile.

Following his recent attack of the BlackBerry Storm, it seems Fry has struggled to get to grips with Vista, and a high-end Sony Vaio laptop, with one Tweet reading: "I hate Vista so much I want to cry. Bought a Vaio. The most useless $4k ever spent".

Apparently purchased as Fry needed a machine running Vista "so that I can review things", the set-up of the new device did not go well with Fry experiencing issues trying to network the device.

"I just want ONE A**ING PC that isn't complete SHIT", ranted Fry, and then: "Too late. It's going out the window. I can't put up with this sort of arse".

Later messages on the micro-blogging service from Fry state that he's calmed down and that "Vista and PCs are so crap it's funny", with the most recent post reading, "The Vista devil spoke thru me and it wasn't pretty".

  • LOL! And to think this man also did the hilarious voice overs on Little Big Planet...

"Awwww. Look at that. A face like a smacked bottom."

  • More proof that Macs are for tech idiots, and PC's are for those who know what they're doing and don't want their hand held. Posted by Kurt, Scotland
  • In fairness to Microsoft there are hundreds of PC manufacturers out there with tens of thousands of (Windows) software and hardware configurations so the odds are stacked up against Vista right from the start.

Apple on the other hand have a very limited and controlled hardware/software platform so setting a Mac rarely requires the copious amounts of hand handing associated with Vista and XP (Yes, I work in IT Support).

I'm guessing that Stephen like many of us who do this stuff for a living have better things to do in the evenings than install services packs and update virus checkers. (I even spotted Sir Tim Berners-Lee using a MacBook the other day..)

  • Kurt: Don't make that mistake. Perhaps those people CAN, but as philbridges rightly pointed out, have better things to do!

I've been in tech support for over 10 years, and definitely 'know what i'm doing', but with my Mac, I spend more time doing what I started out to do, and less time fixing it.

I've tried Vista... went back to XP. Loads better.

  • No surprise there then .... The man is an insufferable pretentious opinionated snob.

I have had a couple of Vaio's over the years. They are overpriced (probably why he bought one), underpowered rubbish and are delivered heaving with trialware and crapware. The last one I had (a VGN-FS295XP) was without doubt the worst computer I have ever owned and cost me over £1200. Still, what can one expect from Sony, profiteering king of the rootkits.

I expect he thought that he was buying a 'state of the art' PC because it was soooo expensive. He would probably have had a better experience buying a cheap Acer or a Dell running Windows XP professional.

We all know that Vista is an irritating pile of poo. If Stephen Fry had done even a small amount of homework on the internet he would have found this out.

Caveat emptor Stephen. Just because something is more expensive doesn't always mean its better

  • I'm also in tech support and I have a lot less work since Vista - it really is better than XP EXCEPT that things have moved around which makes life difficult for those used to XP.

Have to agree on the VAIO bit though. They are loaded with crap and it takes ages to sort. Won't buy one again.

Now if there were an EEEEEEEE with a big screen - that would be a winner. Switch it on an go.
