An unlocked version of the G1 has been made available to developers. Google has outlined the option stating that "some developers may choose not to use a retail device, preferring an unlocked or no-contract device".

The Android Dev Phone 1 is a SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked device that ships with a system that is fully compatible with Android 1.0, and owners can use any SIM in the device.

Hoping to "appeal to developers who live outside of T-Mobile geographies," Google says to purchase an Android Dev Phone 1 device, you must first register as an Android developer on the Android Market site, a process that demands a $25 registration fee.

When this has been done, developers can purchase the device by clicking the "Purchase" link and nabbing an unlocked G1 for $399 (£266) with shipping to the UK available.
