ITV renames catch-up service ITV Player

Can't think why

5 December 2008 11:56 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

It's been revealed that ITV is to rename its online catch-up service the "ITV Player" apparently in an attempt "to create a more recognisable brand".

Launched in March 2007, and currently called "Catch Up TV", it shows popular ITV programmes on the ITV.com site, but will get the new name as a campaign to promote the service kicks off on 19 December.

Ben McOwen Wilson, director of online at ITV, said, "The new logo is part of our aim to create a recognisable and consistent brand for video-on-demand content across the web and TV".

"It's part of our overall ambition to make our content as widely available for audiences through whichever platform suits them best".

Sky recently re-named its online TV services as "Sky Player". Both moves are clearly a bid to cash in on the success of the BBC's iPlayer.

  • How about buying a proper computer instead of a Fisher Price one? Posted by Billy Beaumont, UK
  • is that all you got to say? it's far from a fisher price one mate!! at least it don't crash every 20 mins billy boy!!

Mind you i doubt you can afford a mac, or the software to go with it!!
Some of us have to use macs due to our profession as you can no longer get the software for crappy PC's...... say's a lot for Microsoft.

  • Great stuff but why rename it?

  • Hahaha, Fisher Price. Macs are very cool, but the most recent ones? Nah, not for me. I'm not technically minded enough! It's very hard to figure out. But yeah, they're good.

Although PCs have their merrits, don't be biased, if there were no PCs we wouldn't have mac - competition spurs people on to do better and bigger!

So, PCs and Macs both need to get credit. Both good for what they do!

By the way, ITV player? Definately copying iPlayer, unsuccessfully in my opinion!

  • Pointless Mac vs. IBM Compatible PC debate in an entirely wrong forum to be honest!
    But since you lot started.......

Macs are hardware identical to PCs ever since the switch to Intel Core CPUs and as such are easily comparable, and I am sorry to say that macs only win on the aesthetic side of things.

As for the fisher price reference, surely PCs are more modular by design and therefore should be called fisher price computers!?!.

So if you want a Computer, buy a PC, if you want a Design statement buy a Mac (which I think are superior and easier to use for average Home users wanting to browse the web etc..., but not for Scientific purposes)

P.S.: Microsoft Windows does not equate to PCs any more than Linux, Pc-BSD or BeOS etc....

  • Hey guys, if it doesn't run on OS x, then use Windows via Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion. That way you can run Windows programs on your aesthetically pleasing Mac, with it's easy to use OS. Using Parallels Desktop in Coherence mode you run Windows applications transparently, as if they were native Mac OS x programs.

It will cost you for second operating system & software to run the Virtual Machine as it's called, but a lot less than the cost of an equally specified PC.

I certainly don't have room on my desk for two 23 inch monitors.

  • OK, it';s a rel;aunch. Will the video quality still be crap? will it still be based on bloody Silverlight? Will it still be impossible to spool forward over inane adverts of brands asking to be blacklisted?

I gave up using it because of the factors and I'm pretty unlikely to bother again unless they're addressed.

Until then, I'll stick with a HDD PVR and if I miss a show, well, current ITV content isn't actually that unmissable and there's always the (endless) repeats.

  • I have a Mac and ITV Catch Up does work for me, but it's clunky at best, let's hope the rebrand brings some improvements. Channel 4's service doesn't work on Mac. Posted by Chris Barker, uk
  • How about getting it to work for the millions of Linux users in the world? Why are ITV punishing us, when the BBC embrace us? Eh? Posted by Davey Dave, UK
  • Davey, have a search for the ITV player firefox plug in. With that and VLC, you won't need silverlight and can enjoy ITV Player programs :) Posted by Steve, UK
