Vodafone has released a software update for the BlackBerry Storm in an attempt to improve software issues some customers have been having.

Although leaked versions have been floating around the web for some time, this is the first official update that has been released.

Currently available on Vodafone.de, the 103MB OS update will take the software revision to version 4.7.0.78 from the shipped 4.7.0.65 version.

It is not clear however whether or not UK customers will be OK to download the update.

The update is expected to improve accelerometer lag, touchscreen accuracy and a problem some users are experiencing with the microphone cutting out randomly within calls.

We have contacted Vodafone in the UK and are awaiting both whether or not it is good for UK customers to download from the Germany site and if not, when the update will be offered here in the UK.

By the look of the download page, the software update will need a PC to run the software as it is an .EXE file.

We will keep you posted.

UPDATE: Vodafone UK has got in touch with Pocket-lint to say that the German version is multilingual meaning you can download it without fear of turning your handset German.

Additionally a spokesman for the UK arm of the company has said that it expects the download to be available on the UK site shortly with an Over The Air download available next week for those not interested in downloading it via their PC.

If you've downloaded the software update we would love to hear your experience in the comments below.

  • I bought a UK STORM at release 4.7.0.65. I heard that an upgrade to 78 was due as there was much discussion on the NET. My phone had sluggish accelerometers, slow apps and romped through battery. I decided to try the Vodafone DE site and downloaded the upgrade - it has seemed to work like a dream - no problems with install at all (make sure if using a laptop you are on MAINS POWER). It took about 25 mins so BE PATIENT - at one point it looks like it has frozen but it has NOT. Phone seems fine now, rotation of screen is much better - will have to wait and see if battery life is improved. A good tip- delete Vodafone Live - it polls the the network all the time and consumes battery. Posted by Ian Joseph, England
  • I have just upgraded my Storm too (via the Blackberry Desktop Manager). So it must essentially be the same as the one on Vodafone DE. It is a relief that Vodafone and RIM released this update so soon (it's a shame that consumers had to be guinea pigs yet again and point out these flaws in the first place though!) I think that one of the reasons why the Storm can have a poor battery life is due to the phone not fully exiting applications, after about a week or so, once I started getting used to the phone, I realised that apps such as the camera were still running, which I suspect will drain the battery pretty quickly Posted by Adrian , Warrington, England
  • Well now heres a turn up I didnt wxpect to be able to connect to my tomtom 720 internet services but yes it did , and they didnt even know it

    3. Reconnected the blackberry storm to the tomtom
    4. retried to connect to view weather on the service menu, Waited, it the tom tom stuch at 50% for 5mins
5 Still waited, it then, the tomtom then jumped through 75% and asked for settings such as passwords, confirmed everything and up came the weather, yipiee!!!!!!

    6. connected traffic and yes it connected,

It looks as if the patch supplied 4.7.0.78 has worked, (you may see applicatoin 4.7.0.100.78 in the download but it is the right one well done Vodaphone!!!!
