Asus to offer cheaper Eee Box

Celeron processor to replace Atom to cut costs

2 December 2008 15:50 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

It has already promised a $200 Eee netbook, and it seems Asus is going to cut the costs of its nettop offering too.

Apparently due to the Eee Box range not selling as well as was hoped, Asus is to introduce a cheaper Celeron version of the Asus Eee box.

The new version will see its Intel Atom processor replaced with a 1.2GHz Celeron 220 processor. In addition, to add more value, the new models will get a larger hard drive - increased from 80GB to 120GB.

The Celeron-powered Eee Box will cost around the $240 mark, DigiTimes' sources report, which compares to the $350 the current version costs.

  • Terrible move, Celerons are junk; better to provide a bare-bones machine without RAM or HD, but with a driver CD/DVD and an Atom 330 (dual core), so that we don't have to pay for:
    a single core CPU,
    not much memory,
    a tiny hard disk,
    a useless OS.
So we can fit proper components, like 2GB of RAM and a 500GB Hard disk, and have the basis for a mini server.
