Nokia says DAB radio on phones possible

Just waiting for mass adoption

Nokia says DAB radio on phones possible

2 December 2008 11:34 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Nokia has said that it would put DAB into their handsets when the technology becomes universally adopted.

Nokia however refused to put a date on the launch of the technology in a phone.

"When the technology reaches mass adoption we would consider putting DAB radios into our phones", said Sari Stahlberg, director of product and technology marketing at Nokia.

When we are likely to see that mass adoption is anyone's guess. Again Stahlberg refused to put a number on it, suggesting that it would have to be more than 50% across Europe rather than the current low figures.

"The more the technology is adopted across Europe and other territories, the more chance it's got of being included".

Latest figures released by the Digital Radio Development Bureau suggest 31.4% of adults now listen to a digital platform each week with DAB leading the way with a weekly reach of 17.8%.

  • I've said it before, and I have no doubt that I will say it again, - DAB's acceptance as a mobile format (Despite its undoubted technical superiority, value for money and ability to deliver into the future") will never be fully realised until its is readily available in Mobile Telephones!

Nokia however have a huge vested interest in promoting "its" technology (DVB-H) and hence the likelyhood of them ever including DAB (which IS an acknowledged standard across the globe)! is far from likely. Chicken and egg!!

  • "Despite its undoubted technical superiority, value for money and ability to deliver into the future"

Where on earth do you get that from? DAB is a diabolical standard, and the reason why all those national DAB stations closed down earlier this year was because the transmission costs for DAB are ridiculously expensive - so I fail to see where you get that it's good "value for money" either.

Also, DVB-H *is* a vastly superior digital broadcasting standard to DAB. DVB-H is basically a 2nd generation mobile digital broadcasting system as opposed to DAB being a 1st generation one.

It's good to see that Nokia won't be including DAB until basically Europe has adopted DAB+, and to be honest I don't even see the point in including DAB or DAB+ when they could just continue to provide Internet radio on their handsets at no extra cost.

  • Switzerland has a complete DAB coverage all over populated regions. The only reason I'm not listening to it, is that there are no Nokia phones available which support it. Posted by Yosh, Switzerland
