YouTube to create global Symphony Orchestra

Calling for video auditions now

YouTube is calling for musicians around the world to submit audition videos for a chance to join their new orchestra.

The site, better known for amateur vids of dogs skateboarding, is to hold the YouTube Symphony Orchestra and summit in April 2009, describing it as the world's first collaborative online orchestra connecting aspiring musicians with leaders and stars in the classical world.

YouTube says the project will, "transform individual performances into a global symphony and change the way musicians connect over the Internet". A grand finale is planned for a chosen few at Carnegie Hall in New York.

From now until 28 January, musicians can submit their vids to www.youtube.com/symphony. Musicians must perform two pieces: "The Internet Symphony", an original Tan Dun composition written specifically, and a second classical piece of their choosing.

Entries will be judged by experts from the London Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and when narrowed down, will be finalised by votes from the YouTube community.
