Lego was a big part of my Christmas growing up. All those brightly coloured bricks and the only limit being my imagination.

Things have moved on somewhat, but it's still a big hit each year as new generations ask Santa to bring the latest Lego kits their way.

The Mindstorms robots are set to be big sellers this year and looking at this I can see why.

  • I work as an educational consultant teaching Students and Teachers Lego NXT and i assure you it does NOT do what it shows in the vid. Someone has created a 3D computer model and animated it. Its true that a standard kit makes the model featured above, but only the legs actually move! and fairly slowly. The standard kit also makes many more incredible machines and to my mind, it is the best robotics kit for students and teachers out there. Especially because the programming software caters for everyone from absolute beginners to Degree level research. If you want to buy one, go to an educational retailer such as commotion or rapid electronics and buy the standard NXT kit, plus the educational extra pack which has all the tank tracks and extra gears without which you cannot truly create stuff you dream of. And if you want to get competitive, the First Lego League is a great competition.
