Pret A Manger to roll out contactless payment

27 November 2008 17:15 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Pret A Manger has announced it is to offer contactless payment facilities following a successful trial in London.

The sandwich shop chain said it will roll-out the integrated contactless electronic point-of-sale systems to 171 UK stores.

Due to be completed by April 2009, it's being described as one of the largest such schemes and will allow customers to pay for items of £10 and less by just waving their card near a reader, without the need for a PIN, speeding up transactions.

Similar businesses offering such quick-pay services are EAT, Yo! Sushi and Coffee Republic.

In related news, Barclaycard, who will help power Pret's systems, has announced that over one million contactless cards have already been issued.
