Google to cut contract employees

But no plans to lay off full time employees

25 November 2008 14:41 GMT / By Katie Scott

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is planning on making some job cut backs.

Those facing the axe are contract employees but the company added that it is not planning on cutting any full time staff.

"We have been thinking for some time, before the acute phase of the economic crisis, about significantly reducing the number of contract workers", spokeswoman Jane Penner told the paper.

Penner would not, however, be drawn on how many staff could be going nor at what kind of pace Google is going to make the cuts.

The Wall Street Journal says that Google currently has 20,123 company employees and about 10,000 contractors.
