YouTube goes widescreen

960 pixels for your viewing pleasure

25 November 2008 10:40 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

"Bigger isn't always better... but in this case, we believe it is", so states the YouTube blog announcing the news that the world's most popular video sharing website is going widescreen.

The Google-owned site claims that the new player size is a result of user feedback: "Over the years we've heard a lot of feedback from you about what you'd like to change about YouTube, and the size of our video player is always top of mind".

YouTube is expanding the width of the page to 960 pixels - up from the previous 425 pixels - to "better reflect the quality" of the videos created, and the screens used to watch them.

The new, wider player is in a widescreen aspect ratio that YouTube hopes will offer a "more powerful" viewing experience, although 4:3 aspect ratio videos will still play "just fine".
