Russian game simulates war with Georgia

Confrontation - Peace Enforcement hitting shops soon

23 November 2008 17:37 GMT / By Katie Scott

A Russian games developer has made the controversial decision to create a new, although virtual, war between Russia and Georgia.

The game "Confrontation - Peace Enforcement", which will go on sale in Russia next month, is set as Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili gets support from unnamed Western powers and decides to launch another attack to seize back the contested states South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The game also points the finger at NATO, and Poland - the latter which is named as the chief supporter of the Georgian authorities.

The games' developer give this outline of the plot: "NATO does not stay out of it, pushing Poland forward as its representative and Ukraine blockades the Black Sea fleet in Sevastopol".

"Russia cannot remain out of it and launches a strike in response."

Players then get to manoeuvre forces from Russia, Poland, Georgia and Abkhazia.

But the makers insist that the game should not be taken too seriously.

"Politics are politics and a game is a game. These things should not be confused", Alexander Dmitrevsky, the business development director at one of the game's makers, Russobit-M, told Reuters.

  • Meh, Russians should understand that they are NOT welcome on their tanks in the neighbouring small democracy's...

    END OF STORY!

    P.S.

I speak Russian fluently and have been to Georgia on two occasions. It is a wonderful country with very hospitable people. (Unless you go their on a Russian tank to "protect" somebody from them and to shoot/kill and rob people...)

  • Who cares about the game. I regularly play kuma war, which simulates American events in Iraq including a mission that kills Uday and Kussei Hussein. I can't see much difference here. Posted by Chris Duffy, UK
  • I agree with your earlier comments, but since Georgia is not a democracy, as it was proved on 7/11 and later on 8.8.8 It is actually a fascist country run by bloodthirsty, unhinged lunatic. It is quite clear to majority of people that the Russians had every right to defend their citizens and Peacekeepers in S.O and Abkhazia. Indiscriminate bombing and killing of children and women must not go unpunished.
So, after all, their tanks ware welcomed by Ossetian and Abkhazian People!!!

And that’s exactly what Russian army has done.
And to make things even clear to you.. I’m Georgian and what is happening in my country is very similar to the case in Zimbabwe. Saakashvili has institutionalized corruption, unemployment is historically high, we have no freedom of press, TV or freedom of speech!! people are imprisoned for holding different views, I hope you don’t want to defend that kind regime would you?

My biggest worry is that if EU ever relaxes it’s border control for Georgians, simply put it up to 80% of entire population will just leave the country, and Georgia as a state will cease to exist. I will enjoy this game, maybe at least virtually I’ll manage to assassinate Saakashvili. Many years later I will be known as a hero who saved his country from complete destruction.
