It was a fervent HD DVD supporter, then it dropped the format and then it promised us a Blu-ray DVD player.

Well Onkyo has now delivered.

Its first Blu-ray player is the DV-BD606 is claimed to "squeeze every last ounce of benefit out of the new Blu-ray disk format" including being able to play interactive bonus material in picture-in-picture mode.

The player delivers a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080p and a refresh rate option of 24 pictures per second (via 24fps-capable HD televisions and AV receivers).

Also the players uses the latest HDMI tech (1.3a) which means it can support Deep Color (on appropriate discs).

The player will also scale up standard definition DVDs to 1080p resolution, as well as playing discs encoded with DivX, MP3 and JPEG files.

The DV-BD606 is £399.99, and is available now in all-black or black and silver.

  • Wow looks beautiful. Kind of like my 1984 CD player. Silver and black together at last. Posted by Robert Smith, Lithuania

  • I had been a fan of Onkyo, but was disappointed with the way they handled their top-end, home-theater receiver last year...they've lost me. Too many problems with supply, product glitches, etc. They have put out good products in the past, but for now, I'll stick with my Yamaha receiver and Sony 80GB PS3 w/Blu-ray player. In combination with a Samsung 52" HD-LCD and HDMI cables, I get all the picture I need, including upscaling of DVDs, plus have the benefit of HD gaming in just 3 components, including TV. And the PS3 is less expensive than this unit (at least in the US). As a side-note, I am not an employee or paid message poster...just a home-theater geek that wants a great set-up for a reasonable price.

That said, please post if you give this a test run. It might be good for an upgrade to my upstairs system once the price comes down.
