Apple has released the latest firmware for the iPhone, with the iPhone 2.2 software update available to download now.

Most notably, the 246MB file offers enhancements to Maps that include the availability of Google Street View on the device as well as public transit and walking directions.

Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application both over Wi-Fi and via the user's cellular network.

More general fixes include a decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls, improvements in HTML email formatting, and isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email have been fixed.

Pressing the Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen while there's said to be improved stability and performance of Safari as well as improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages.
