Free security software from Microsoft

Protects machines running XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Microsoft is to stop selling its all-in-one security and management package OneCare, but is launching a new software suite to keep machines protected.

The free security and anti-virus software is designed to protect PCs running XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

The computing giant is to stop selling OneCare from the end of June 2009, and then PC owners will be able to download the new software, which is codenamed Morro.

Says BBC News: "[This] will be a no-frills program suited to smaller and less powerful computers".

Amy Barzdukas, senior director of product management in the online services division at Microsoft, added: "This new, no-cost offering will give us the ability to protect an even greater number of consumers, especially in markets where the growth of new PC purchases is outpaced only by the growth of malware".
