Datawind prepping a netbook

Future launch could see unlimited browsing bundled

13 November 2008 13:11 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Datawind, the company that offers the Pocketsurfer devices, is planning to launch a full netbook, it has been revealed.

And, perhaps more of interest, like the handheld gadget the company produces, the netbook may also offer unlimited web browsing.

The company's chief operating officer David Elder told Electric Pig: "We're heading down that road. Next year you'll see a netbook product".

Elder did not reveal specs for the future device, but did state: "I think we need to make a form factor differentiation - we’ll offer a decent size of screen".

"Right now we’re in negotiations with prospective manufacturing partners. People are very excited, it would be ridiculous of us not to enter (the netbook market)."

The netbook will be "contractless" and likely to offer unlimited usage with the company offsetting the data costs by advertising.

  • In India I have purchased a Pocket Surfer 2.o from Datawind, but found the product to be much lesser than the expectation the officials have claimed at the time of selling it. First the battery back up is very low, the horrible key pad and the letter size is not friendly, when you claim that it is the fastest handheld browsing devise then you need to support the power back up if somebody wants to remain on the web and for browsing needs? Then comes the verification details of the users like me- at the time of purchasing the devise I have asked to submitt certain documents which I deed but afterwards I got four/five calls from HCL the distributor for Indian Market that I need to submitt my passport to use the device, when I replied that I do not have a passport and I am senior working professional working in a Japanese MNC in India and given proof for the same, but my registration got cancelled by the service provider and now unable to use the device, so it is a waste of Rs.12,000/- for me as the company has refused to refund my money and take back the horrible device. When I asked the Corporate Distributor regarding the power backup, I have been replied with that I need to purchase a solar charger so that it will help me. Now my point is I already carry two devices, now why should I buy another device. I feel I have been taken for a ride and cheated.

Now I heard the same company is coming with a Net Book, I urge the CEO, please spare us in the Indian market.

Your first offering in Indian market is horrible and is waste of money for people like me.

  • I bought a Pocket Surfer from the Ideal World Shopping Channel. The product did not work as the SIM was refused access to the network. Multiple phone calls to Datawind in UK failed to get the SIM access to the network. I returned the product for a refund.
My local Maplin 'hope' to get the new netbook for a demo machine. We shall see if that works.
