Huawei to launch Android phone

Own-brand offering for operators

10 November 2008 16:39 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Chinese company Huawei is planning to launch an Android-based mobile phone in the first half of 2009.

Better known to UK consumers as a manufacturer of mobile broadband modems, the company currently makes a Windows Mobile smartphone, but plans to expand to the Google-based platform, as well as the Symbian OS, next year.

The news was revealed by James Chen, director of marketing for the company's terminals division, who stated: "Huawei has had a late take-off in smartphones, but our focus on customisation means we can still take the lead and achieve our targets".

A member of Android's Open Handset Alliance, Huawei will offer the phones as own-label options for operators, like it does with Vodafone's in-house range, rather than under Huawei branding.
