On the eve of the launch of the Android powered G1 mobile phone here in the UK, Asus, makers of the Eee PC, is rumoured to be contemplating launching a new Android powered mobile phone in the first half of next year.

According to DigiTimes in Taiwan, Asus plans to release the handset in Asia first before going global if it's a success.

"Asustek Computer plans to launch its first Android-based Google phone in the first half of 2009, according to company sources. Asustek may initially sell the Android-powered handsets under its own brand in the Taiwan market before also launching customized models for overseas clients, said market sources close to the company", says the report.

While Asus isn't a brand you associate with mobile phones here in the UK, the company has dabbled with Microsoft Windows Mobile devices in its home territory.

It's thought that the company would utilise its Eee PC brand capitalising on the massive global success.
