Following comments from Steve Jobs, Apple CEO at the company's quarterly results, about Apple having "some pretty interesting ideas" about netbooks. A journalist at the New York Times has been tipped off to a new Apple device surfing the Internet.

According John Markoff on a NYTimes blog, a search engine who wanted to remain unnamed has spotted web visits from an unannounced Apple product with a display somewhere between an iPhone and a MacBook.

The news has sparked debate as to what the mystery device could be. It is a netbook Apple Mac, an iPhone with a better screen resolution or something inbetween?

While web user-agent identifications are easy to falsify, the BlackBerry can choose to be treated as a mobile browser or Firefox browser for example, commentators believe (probably hopefully) that its unlikely that it's a hoax.

What do you think it could be?
