Jobs has "pretty interesting ideas" for netbooks

Although states "not a lot of them being sold"

During the Apple quarterly results financial conference call, the company's CEO Steve Jobs again touched on the hot topic of netbooks.

The last time this subject was discussed by Jobs it was at the launch of the new MacBooks when Jobs said: "In terms of netbooks, that's a nascent market that's just getting started".

This time round, and amidst rumours of the sub-$1000 Mac mini being scrapped, the Apple boss also discussed cheaper computers:

"This particular downturn is not creating a market of cheaper computers. That market has existed for some time. And there are parts of that market that we choose not to play in."

Stating that Apple are "not tremendously worried", Jobs said: "As we look at the netbook category, that's a nascent category. As best as we can tell, there's not a lot of them being sold".

"You know, one of our entrants into that category if you will is the iPhone, for browsing the Internet, and doing email and all the other things that a netbook lets you do. And being connected via the cellular network wherever you are, an iPhone is a pretty good solution for that, and it fits in your pocket."

"But we'll wait and see how that nascent category evolves, and we have got some pretty interesting ideas if it does evolve."
