Android Source Code available for all. Phones, Mobile phones, Android, Google 1

Google has, as promised, released the source code for the Android operating system meaning anyone keen to release an Android based handset without paying for a licence fee can do so.

More than just the SDK to develop applications, those keen enough can download the whole operating system and have a play and a tinker with the interworking of the mobile phone platform from the Open Handset Alliance.

The news comes just a day before the US launch of the T-Mobile G1 handset.

The move will mean that bugs and improvements can be found and fixed by the open source community rather than just Google developers and should mean that the platform has the opportunity to grow quickly against other operating systems from Microsoft and Apple.

Additionally the news means that now anyone one can put Android into a device. An Android netbook anyone?

We will keep you posted.
