IMOVIO has launched the iKIT, a tiny device angled as an alternative to both a smartphone and a netbook.

The iKIT is a "Pocket Mobile Companion" measuring 95mm by 65mm by 15.5mm, weighing 113 grams and is described as "as portable as a mobile phone".

The 802.11b/g Wi-Fi enabled device comes with a full QWERTY keyboard, a microSD card slot that supports up to 8GB cards, a 2.8-inch QVGA display and an option to convert the USB for use with an HSDPA dongle.

Aimed at "mainly women or teens", the clamshell device runs Linux 2.4.19, gets the Opera Mini 4.1 browser, a 312MHz Marvell processor and has a built-in speaker and webcam.

There's a mini-USB port plus dedicated hotkeys for applications, including a music and video player and webcam and Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR.

Applications on the device include a calculator, up to 2,000 contacts, media folder with playback of MP3s, MP4, AVI and JPEGs files, a notepad, a world clock and alarm clock.

It's charged via Mini-USB with stand-by battery life said to be 250 hours, IMOVIO claims 3 hours operational battery life.

The suggested retail price for the iKIT is around £99 and it's currently being marketed to mobile phone operators to sell on to consumers.
