A new line-up of televisions boasting DivX compatibility is being promised by Samsung.

Samsung and DivX have now signed a "multiyear agreement" and the first televisions able to playback DivX movie files will arrive in early 2009.

The TVs will be able to playback these media files directly via USB slots or via Ethernet connection.

Samsung already offers devices that will play DivX files including DVD players and phones, but overall, there are now more than 100 million DivX certified devices now available.

When we have more details on what you can expect from the DivX certified TVs, we'll let you know.

  • What a complete waste of time. This would have been a good idea several years ago, but through modern games consoles and Media Centre PC style hardware we can now stream just about anything through our TV's regardless of integrated codec support.

They should instead spend their money investing in getting Wi-Fi as standard on the back of their slinky slabs. I'm really keen to see WHDI in next generation panels so that I can dual screen my laptop with my lounge leviathan sans cable. That way I could play anything on it!
