3's parent company Hutchison Whampoa has created a new handset manufacturing company called "Inq".
Pronounced "ink", the new firm will supply operator 3 with Inq-branded phones, the first of which is to launch in the next few weeks.
Reports vary, but Inq is said to have between five or six handsets in the pipeline for its first 12 months.
All the handsets will get data services, with instant messaging, mobile email, Facebook and Skype calling as key features.
BusinessWeek says the handsets are expected to cost consumers $50 "or less".
