A movie version of the classic first-person shooter series Doom staring The Rock has topped the US and Canada box office according to studio estimates.

Doom debuted this weekend at number one in the States with $15.4m (£8.7m).

Racing drama Dreamer was second with Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit slipping to third place.

The studio behind Doom, Universal, however had hoped for a bigger opening weekend, admitted Nikki Rocco, head of distribution.

The film starring WWE wrestler The Rock and British actress Rosamund Pike, sees a group of soldiers battle evil beings after being sent to investigate what went wrong on a space station. Interestingly most of the film is shot from the first person perspective to tie in with the games.

The film is due in the UK on 28 October 2005.
