Channel 4 dropping DAB radio plans

Another blow to the digital platform

10 October 2008 12:25 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Channel 4 is dumping its plans for DAB radio stations to be launched and withdrawing from the 4 Digital Group off-shoot.

The 4 Digital Group, led by Channel 4 Radio and including Emap, BSkyB and the Carphone Warehouse were planning to originally launch 10 new DAB stations to challenge the BBC.

The licences for the new stations were granted by Ofcom last year, but plans had been delayed, then officially scaled back, with only one of three Channel 4-branded stations planned, and now canned completely.

A conference call with Ofcom 4DG shareholders is due to take place today, after which an announcement will be made internally to Channel 4's staff, and then a statement is expected.
