Firefox introduces Geode plug-in

"You’ve arrived in a new city, a new continent, a new coffee shop. You don’t really know where you are, and are looking for a good place to eat. You pull out your laptop, fire up Firefox, and go to your favorite review site. It automatically deduces your location, and serves up some delicious suggestions a couple blocks away and plots directions there."

So goes the preamble for a new beta release from Mozilla for its Firefox browser, the location-aware Geode plug-in that will use local Wi-Fi hotspots to pinpoint a location.

Geode is described as "an experimental add-on to explore geolocation" in Firefox 3.1, it's being released now so that developers can begin experimenting and users can provide feedback.

At the moment Geode is currently in use via a demo "Food Finder" feature which shows users the cafes and restaurants within walking distance, but more uses are planned in the near future.
