AMD to split into two companies

Manufacturing to be done by "The Foundry Company"

Chip-maker AMD is to divide its operation into two distinct areas and accept some serious multi-billion financial backing from two Abu Dhabi investment firms, the company has announced.

The seperate arms will be AMD, that will be "financially stronger and more focused on design and development" and new, part-owned by AMD, manufacturing company "The Foundry Company".

AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company said The Foundry Company, will "address the growing global demand for independent, leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing".

The Foundry Company will be based at an Dresden, Germany as well as get a new "state-of-the-art facility" in New York.
