Virgin Media has won plaudits for the speeds it has offered its broadband customers, but is there more to come?

Way back in February, Virgin Media began the first part of a major broadband rehaul programme, offering customers on its "L" tier broadband package a free upgrade taking their broadband speeds from 4MB to 10MB.

In January, however, there were hints that speeds could go as high as 50Mbps following successful trials in Ashford, Folkstone and Dover.

Now, a new deal with Carphone Warehouse, could herald that this super fast service may soon be available.

Virgin Media and Carphone Warehouse are going to jointly promote a Triple Play package (phone, broadband and TV) with a free laptop for £49.99 per month.

The package will also include XL phone, XL TV channels and a free laptop and will also require existing modems to be updated.

The details were leaked onto the internet and the XXL package is not currently on either Virgin's broadband or Carphone Warehouse's web pages.

  • 20 Mbps equates to 2 to 4 Mbps on the existing system. Therefore if Virgin state 50 Mbps I would maybe expect 10Mbps on a good day! Posted by Dave Lister, UK
  • What are u on about? I had 20Mbps last year at uni and was able to download at 20Mbps when i needed to. The only time it was reduced was during peak hours (5-10pm weekdays). I imagine 50Mbps will actually give you 50Mbps if you find a service that requires it. Posted by James, UK
  • Great headline figure and I have been with blueyonder since the very start, sadly since Virgin took over, there is now throttling and daily caps that when hit you get your speed dropped down for 5 hours, so if you do get 50Mbps, dont sound like anyone will be able to do much with it before they hit Virgin's daily cap limit. And if you use services like in the cloud and you backup to it, you reach there limit much quicker as there upload allowance is much lower before you are throttled down. So same when they start offering 100Mbps, pretty pointless, apart from having the we are fastest headline. Shame the old Blueyonder was a amazing service. Posted by Graham, UK
  • The Triple XL package isn't new: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/product.do?id=15163 Posted by John, UK
  • Will this be available to us loyal existing customers? Or is it another case of only for new accounts?
Virgin really need to examine their customer service techniques. Excluding people who have paid money to them for years will only serve to drive more of us away

  • The 50mbps will be running on a completely different system to the current 2/4/10/20mbps services. The network backhaul is currently being upgraded to support this. Posted by Haydn, UK
  • I think the first post meant 2-4megabytes per second not megabits

I'm on the 20Mbps service now and the max I've ever seen is 2.4MB/s
And the post from John, UK... The triple play package isn't new no but the one you're referring to is the triple XL, this one is different, I think they're referring to the 50Mbps service to be included "The package will also include XL phone, XL TV channels" - They say ALSO here so i'd take that to mean 50Mbs BB, XL TV and XL Phone.

  • "Does XXL package herald speed boost to come?"

a 1kbit boost is still a boost, sure, but when compaired to their current upload rates, but it also makes virgin media once again the uk's worst D/U ratio 34/1 for the second time, beating their current werst uk ratio of 26/1

incase thats not clear the new XXL package gives you less than the minimum upload rates to use that 50Mbit download at 1.5Mbit upload.

    vm= 34/1 ratio
    Be*= 10/1 ratio and a 2.4 Mbit upload

  • I'm on 20Mb here in Cardiff, and it is OK, I reliably get 8-10Mbps including during peak times.
I've found a few thing do affect your speed; your router, time of day and the operating system you’re using.
I replaced my 6 year old netgear router earlier this year because I discovered it could not throughput any more than 6.5Mbps, my current linksys is capable of 230Mbps which should be fine for while ;-) see smallnetbuilder.com for router throughput tests.

I found the best time for speed is between 3-6am, I got my best speed of 18.5Mbps during this time with Puppy Linux, so it's the best time to see how fast your connection really is.

The OS seems to affect speed too, during busy times using Linux it gave speeds of 11-12Mbps, Windows XP is usually around 9-10Mbps, Vista is slightly faster at around 10-11Mbps and Mac OS X I've found to be a bit slower at around 8-9Mbps.

Different servers around the world get busy at different times of day, so I don't expect to get full performance all the time, the further away a web server is, the slower it usually gets.

I think the upload speed is a restriction to performance, it could be better on virgin.

    Hope this helps.
