Microsoft is about to launch an entirely new operating system - for cloud computing.

As revealed by company’s chief executive Steve Ballmer, speaking at an event in London, the CEO is reported to have said that Microsoft would announce "Windows Cloud" within 4 weeks.

Balmer added that he's "sure we’ll have a snazzier name on launch".

"We’re embracing cloud computing as much as anyone", Ballmer said, claiming that Microsoft has more related products than Google.

Microsoft is holding a developers conference in that States at the end of October, which is when the announcement is expected. We'll bring you more when we have it.

  • I can't help feeling that we're in for thunderstorms if Microsoft are about to launch an operating system for cloud computing. It looks as if it's set to come head to head with Amazon's Elastic Computer Cloud (EC2) , due to launch this autumn. I suspect that Windows Cloud is not the rumoured Midori operating system but an extension of the Live services we seem to see everywhere.
