30 September 2008 17:52 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Vodafone has revealed, in a roundabout way, that it is launching the BlackBerry Storm in the UK, confirming Pocket-lint's leak earlier in the month.

The page on Vodafone's website gives users the chance to win the new smartphone by registering their details.

The site says: "Get the incredible power of the BlackBerry Storm smartphone in your hands. Simply register your interest in this new BlackBerry phone and we'll keep you up to date with launch news as it breaks. Plus, by signing up, you'll automatically be entered into our prize draw to win your very own BlackBerry Storm smartphone".

No other details are given as to when the official launch date will be however Pocket-lint's sources have previously confirmed that an announcement is due at the beginning of October, with product in store at the end of the month.

Interestingly the competition runs until the 25 October...

Thanks to Ian for the tip off.

  • Just spoke to Vodafone CS to let them know that I need to port my number over from Orange by the 25th and mentioned my interest in the Storm. I was advised taht the 25th was a 'very good day'! The guy I did speak to did mention that they were not to utter a word to anyone and Vodafone put up the competition without giving them any warning but it was practically confirmed to me that the competition end date is the release date for this handset. I will be waiting until then to sign up for my Storm.

Out of interest, I was also informed that the Bold is also being made available for Consumers in addition to Business users. It wasn't showing on their website but I guess that will be updated!

  • I to have spoken to Vodafone UK CS about this and information on this handset is hush-hush: claims of non-disclosure agreements being signed by Vodafone staff.
I remain sceptical about touchscreen technology (hated the HTC Touch Diamond) and am concerned that the trusty, reliable QWERTY keyboard that, with yet to be surpassed push email, sets BB apart from the others will be lost with touchscreen.
I want to be wrong. I wonder if all of the people who ordered their BB Bold's will rue not waiting 8 weeks for this one?

  • In reply to Chris's comment regarding Bold users, i actually own a Bold on Orange at the moment and i'm VERY happy with it however the BB Storm looks really good - a step up in product innovation from RIM's point of view.

However i am going to wait until this device is actually in the store before i commit to it - the touch screen is in actual fact a touch-click-screen. In other words you have to push in the screen a bit in order to select an item as opposed to touching it like you do with the Apple iPhone...

I've already played about with an iPhone so it will be intereseting to see how the two compare to operate - the iPhone (for now) has the upper hand in user friendly touch screen interface
