Mysterious carrier-free option goes live on Apple site

Even though the iPhone 3G has been available in the region since July through 3, Hong Kongers (Hong Kongese?) can now pick up a like, totally unlocked and official iPhone direct from Apple.

The Apple site states: "iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation".

Prices are 5400 Hong Kong dollars for the 8GB-er, which is around £377, compared to our locked-to-O2 Pay & Go model for £350, while the 16GB model is 6200 Hong Kong dollars - about £433, as opposed to our £400 price tag.
