London mayor promising Wi-Fi access everywhere

And hits out at gov plans for broadband vouchers

Vocal London mayor, Boris Johnson, has hit out at Gordon Brown's plans to give vouchers to low income households to get them on the Internet.

In an interview on BBC Radio, Johnson claimed that it would be far more fruitful to get blanket Wi-Fi coverage in cities including the capital.

Johnson stated that the PM's plans smacked of a bribe.

"Let's look at ways that we can improve the infrastructure in this city so that there's Wi-Fi access everywhere", he told the BBC.

"I think that's the way we should be going, rather than bunging money to people, which sounds a bit like a desperate bribe by the prime minister."

He did add, however: "I certainly think there is a case for dealing with people who are information technology-poor, and trying to help people get online".
