PC World has launched its first bespoke energy-saving personal computer, the Advent "Eco PC".

Featuring a fan-less self-cooling system, the Advent Eco PC apparently uses about 25 watts of power - around half of the power it takes to light a typical household light bulb.

Specs include a T5250 Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows Vista Premium, a wireless keyboard and integrated Wi-Fi.

As well as saving energy, PC World claims the computer will also save you money. Based on 4 hours a day use, the Advent Eco PC in Energy Saver mode will cost around £8 per year to run, compared to a traditional PC using an average of 105 watts of power and costing more than £43 per year.

Upping the eco credentials further, the case of the Eco PC is made up of 75% recycled materials, and packaging and printed materials have been minimised with the set-up guide printed on the side of the box.

The Advent Eco PC is available in PC World stores nationwide and online for £599.99.

  • £599 for a computer that might save you £35 a year, when you can buy a faster Compaq Presario SR5522 from PC World for £280. So you _might_ just make your money back in ten years.

But far more likely you'll have thrown the Advent Eco PC away long before then and upgraded it to something with more horsepower.

Where's the logic in buying an eco friendly PC when the manufacturer cynically charges you double what an equivalent machine should cost?

  • Thanks for informing us that 25w is "...apparently around half of the power it takes to light a typical 60W household light bulb. "

    Not a bad-specced machine. Interesting.

  • If you could get it without Windows it might be appealing (trusting the price was reduced in line with that).

  • A good specification and a good idea. Yet a possible non runner in today's Credit Crunch and falling market situation. This is way too expensive for the little one saves. Posted by Carl Barron, Dorset
  • Why is everything ECO so much more money? A non-impressive spec with a low rate power supply, with less options than 'any at all'. Then I have to leave it on all year to save £35.00 (oooh that might be £40 as electric goes up.
