The Wall Street Journal - that got it spot on about the date for the official announcement - has said that T-Mobile's forthcoming Android-based phone will cost $199.

The operator is due to launch the handset, previosuly known as the HTC Dream, but now thought to be dubbed the T-Mobile G1, at at event in New York on 23 September.

The G1 offers a touchscreen and a trackball as well as a sliding QWERTY keyboard, in a "kicktail" design.

Pricing the phone at the $200 mark (on a 2-year contract) will pitch the new Android handset directly against Apple's 8GB iPhone 3G, although monthly costs could vary from AT&T's plans.
