The Apple iPhone 3G has gone on sale in the UK today on a "Pay & Go" basis and the official operator for the device, O2, has told Pocket-lint that it is "selling well".

The first time the Apple mobile has been available on a non-contract basis here, the iPhone 3G 8GB for Pay & Go is selling now for £349.99 while the 16GB version costs £399.99.

A O2 spokesperson told Pocket-lint: "The iPhone 3G Pay & Go has been selling well today and we are very happy with the response. We expect it to be one of the must-have gifts this Christmas".

The Pay & Go handsets are on sale now in O2 stores, The Carphone Warehouse and Apple stores.
