IFA 2008: And takes a swipe at BlackBerry

Wibrain shows off Atom-based i1 series. Hardware, UMPCs, Wibrain, Intel, Photos 0

Lucking in a dark corner of the IFA showfloor, we found Wibrain showing off their i1 series. Wibrain has done the rounds before with their B series, but we couldn’t help snap a few shots.

What was perhaps the most interesting feature was the wording on their marketing leaflets – "Sorry, Blackberry" reads the headline, followed by "We provide you a real free mobile life – full browsing internet plus the complete functionality of Outlook, of course all MS Office documentation anytime, anywhere".

Fighting talk eh?

The specs of the Wibrain i1 UMPC are fairly impressive, offering XP or Linux OS, Intel Atom 1.1GHz or 1.33GHz processor (with Poulsbo US15), 1GB RAM, 30 or 60GB HDD, or 8, 16, or 32GB SSD. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi b/g, tri-band UMTS/HSDPA (3.6Mbps), quad-band GPRS/EDGE and Bluetooth.

You also get a flip-up 1.3MP webcam and slots for your SIM card and SDHC card, as well as the split keypad, touchpad and control buttons.

Despite being only slightly smaller than a house brick, it only features a 4.8in touchscreen, which perhaps takes the power out of the dig at BlackBerry.

We are too mature to mock the Wibrain just because sounds like a playground cuss, but come on guys, until you make this a pocketable model, you can't really attack mobile phones...

No word on availability or price.

  • I admire plucky little Wibrain! What better publicity for a tiny competitor without the resources to force the press to pay attention? Now they can have a bunch of crackberry zombies lurching toward them, droning on about how different and distinctive Wibrain is, compared to a Crackberry. Check Engadget comments, if you don't believe me.

I'd rather read about this genuinely interesting thing than some behemoth strong-arming the press into focusing on 33 devices that will never make it to market.

  • I'll be picking one of these up soon.
Comparing itself to a Blackberry is putting the Wibrain in a lesser league.
Blackberry can not compare to a full blown XP OS with the form factor of a PSP.
I've also never seen a blackberry with a 4.8 screen and such a hi resolution.
As far as UMPCs go this takes the cake.
