Google reveals Android Market

App Store rival to see beta launch when handsets available

Google has revealed details of its plans for the mobile marketplace for Android applications - its direct competitor to Apple's seemingly successful App Store.

In a blog post on the developer's site for the mobile phone operating system, Eric Chu writes:

"I'm happy to share early details of Android Market - an open content distribution system that will help end users find, purchase, download and install various types of content on their Android-powered devices."

It seems Android developers will be able to make their content available to consumers on an open service that will feature a feedback and rating system that Chu describes as similar to YouTube.

In what's being seen as a dig at Apple, Chu states: "We chose the term 'market' rather than 'store' because we feel that developers should have an open and unobstructed environment to make their content available".
